Abstract:

Ultrasound is a non-invasive and radiation-free imaging procedure. It is used for a number of purposes such as monitoring fetal development and evaluating the heart, kidneys, pancreas, liver, eyes, thyroid, and blood vessels of the neck and abdomen. In an ultrasound procedure, a transducer is placed on the skin of the patient near the area being evaluated. The transducer transmits and receives sound by producing high frequency sound waves that enter the body and reflect off of the organs inside. The sound waves bounce back differently depending on the type of tissue and they are measured and turned into images by the ultrasound machine.
