The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European yarn fairs for the spring/summer 2016 season. The author of the report visited Filo, Pitti Immagine Filati and Expofil where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular. Although there were uncertainties caused by turbulence in some markets which were previously considered to be reliable, there was a positive atmosphere at the fairs and many spinners reported improvements in trading conditions compared with past seasons. Demand for luxury knitwear yarns continues to be strong, and recent advances in technology have enabled spinners to produce the finest, lightest and smoothest knitwear yarns possible. Cotton remains the favourite fibre for the season -- particularly extra-long staple Egyptian cottons -- but linen also continues to be popular and has been blended with other fibres to produce yarns with a dry and papery handle. Colours at the fairs were mostly light and spring-like, and blue was a key colour in all shades. Key trends at the fairs included yarns with metallic details, decorative tape yarns, yarns with performance properties and yarns with a denim look.
