Sioen Industries – based in Belgium – is a world leader in coated technical textiles and industrial protective clothing, and is also a specialist in fine chemicals. The company was originally established as a weaving mill, but has succeeded in expanding and diversifying its operations as a result of a series of acquisitions. Indeed, the company took over 12 companies between 2001 and 2007 – including producers of nonwovens, printer inks, protective apparel and technical textiles. After a pause between 2008 and 2014, the company resumed its investment and in 2016 alone it acquired four companies – bringing the number its employees to more than 3,000. Sioen is also pursuing growth through significant investments in research and development (R&D) activities and innovation. Such investments have allowed the company to commercialise new materials and to collaborate on major projects—such as large-scale seaweed cultivation.
