Denmark, similar to Sweden, has a long tradition for producing and consuming smokeless tobacco. However, cigarettes became popular in the 1950s and consumption of skrå (chewing tobacco) decreased during the following 50 years. In 1997, smokeless tobacco consumption was six tonnes, and skrå’s image was mostly related with the elderly. Since then, the modern version called “tobacco bits” has come to the market.
