In recent years, China’s economy has kept growing at a high speed, the improvement of per capita consumption level brings along the production and consumption of luxuries including gem and jewelry which is becoming the third consumption hotspot just following housing and automobiles. As shown in the data released by the Gems&Jewelry Trade Association of China, the total sale amount of gem and jewelry in 2006 has reached up to RMB 160 billion Yuan with an increase of 14.3% over the previous year.

From 2002 to 2006, the import value of gem and jewelry products has kept increasing at a high speed for four consecutive years. In 2006, the gross import value of gem and jewelry products is up to USD 4.618 billion, an increase of 33.18% over the previous year and is 3.46 times of that in 2002. The annual growth rate is as high as 36.54%.

It can be seen from the imported value of all subdivided products that diamonds (not mounted or set) take the dominance with an import value of USD 2.422 billion, which accounts for 52.46% of the gross import value. The import value of platinum products is about USD1.303 billion, 28.23% of the total, which ranks the second. The third place is taken by silver products (including silver plated with gold and platinum) of which the imported value is about USD 327 million, 7.07% of the total.

The steady growing domestic demands and prosperity of international trade market bring along the fast development of China gem and jewelry industry. In accordance with the data of National Bureau of Statistics of China, the sales income of 329 above-scale firms in gem and jewelry industry is about RMB 47.589 billion Yuan, a growth of about 32.91% over that of the previous year and the total profit is about 1.914 billion Yuan, which means an increase of 59.07% over that of the previous year. The total export value of gem and jewelry products reaches up to USD 6.899 billion with an increase of 24.73% over that of the previous year while the total import value of USD 4.618 billion with an increase of 33.18% over the previous year. It can be judged from the above that China, at the same time of keeping its position as a large manufacturer and exporter of gem and jewelry products, is gradually growing to be a major consumption market of gem and jewelry products.

As far as the ages of the consumers are concerned, as shown in the data released by Gems&Jewellery Trade Association of China, the main consumption crowd of bijou products is consumers aging from 29 to 40. The ratio that consumers aging from 22 to 28 takes up is about 14.1% and that of consumers aging under 22 is about 9.7%, which proves that young and middle aged consumers with good economic background are the backbones for the consumption of gem and jewelry products.

Judging from the consumption demands, we can see that gem and jewelry products rely mainly on the following three sources of demands to pull the consumption increase, which include wedding celebration, daily consumption and inbound foreign tourists. From the viewpoint of industrial development environment, Chinese government has continually perfected the industrial development environment to encourage and expand domestic gem and jewelry industry. Judged from the saturation of market, the rural regions of China have a great potential for gem and jewelry consumption besides the enormous growth space on the consumption level retained by urban residents.

It can be judged through the above that China has large market space and steady growing consumption power. Therefore we are optimistic towards to the consumption tendency of domestic gem and jewelry products. A conservative estimation of 10% growth rate of the average annual demand for gem and jewelry will be kept through the years from 2007 till 2010 and the annual consumption value will be something from RMB 176 billion Yuan to 235 billion Yuan.
