BEIJING- September 30, 2010 – The domestic fiber reinforced construction material market in China (target market) is valued at approximately RMB 17 Bn in revenues as of year-end 2009, according to a recently published GCiS study.

This study focuses on domestic sales of three major types of fiber reinforced construction materials: fiber glass, carbon fiber and aramid fiber.

The market grew by approximately 11% in 2009 down from 14% year-end of 2008, however it should be noted that carbon fiber and aramid fiber both saw negative growth in 2009 due to a reduction in supply for both materials in China. Supply of carbon and aramid fiber, the strands of which are largely manufactured in Japan and the USA, has been diverted to markets with higher demand (most prominently, Boeing’s 787 program that uses an average of 3 kilotons of carbon fiber per year, equivalent to 45% of China’s domestic market). Participants unanimously report that demand exceeds supply for all three of these products.

Fiber glass suppliers, on the other hand, enjoyed a 22% growth in total sales revenues in 2009. This has been largely driven by China’s booming construction, electronics and transport sectors. The key drivers of this market are the development of downstream industries, the scaling of the fiber glass supply, growth the construction sector, the resurgence of the export market and the increasing sophistication of customers’ technical abilities.
