Pitch-based chopped graphitized carbon fiber refers to a high-performance fiber material produced using petroleum pitch or coal tar pitch as raw materials. It undergoes a series of processing steps?including melt spinning, pre-oxidation, carbonization, and high-temperature graphitization (typically at 2000?3000?C)?after which the continuous filaments are cut into short segments ranging from 3 to 50 mm in length. Its core characteristics are defined by the following: the raw material used is pitch rather than PAN (polyacrylonitrile); following graphitization, it exhibits an extremely high degree of graphitization (carbon content >99%); and it exists in a chopped form, facilitating easy mixing and processing with various matrix materials such as thermoplastic/thermosetting resins, metals, and ceramics.

Compared to continuous filaments, the chopped form makes this material more suitable for processes such as injection molding, compression molding, and SMC/BMC fabrication. It endows composite materials with ultra-high modulus (500?950 GPa), ultra-high thermal conductivity (800?1100 W/(m?K)), and a coefficient of thermal expansion that is near-zero or negative; however, it simultaneously retains the inherent characteristics of pitch-based graphitized carbon fibers?namely, high brittleness and lower tensile strength compared to PAN-based fibers. Based on the structure of the raw materials, the fibers can be classified into mesophase pitch-based chopped graphitized carbon fibers (high-performance grade, featuring high modulus and high thermal conductivity) and isotropic pitch-based chopped graphitized carbon fibers (general-purpose grade, featuring heat and wear resistance). Furthermore, based on the degree of graphitization, they can be categorized into low-modulus carbon fiber grades, medium-modulus graphitized fiber grades, and high-modulus/ultra-high-modulus graphitized fiber grades.

The primary raw materials for pitch-based graphitized carbon fiber are byproducts of petroleum refining or coal chemical industries?specifically, petroleum pitch and coal tar pitch. Petroleum pitch is derived from residual oils generated during processes such as crude oil catalytic cracking and ethylene cracking; while resources are relatively abundant, the quality of this raw material tends to fluctuate significantly. Coal pitch is obtained through the high-temperature distillation of coal tar; given the advanced state of the domestic coal chemical industry, raw material costs are relatively low, yet the high content of impurities (such as quinoline-insolubles and ash) necessitates complex refining and purification processes. High-end products, conversely, utilize synthetic mesophase pitch, which is prepared via catalytic polymerization using pure aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g., naphthalene or methylnaphthalene) as feedstock. This approach offers controllable raw material purity and a highly ordered molecular structure, though the associated costs are significantly higher than those of the natural pitch route. Overall, raw material costs account for approximately 30% to 40% of the total production cost. The graphitization stage?involving high-temperature treatment between 2000?C and 3000?C?consumes vast amounts of energy; consequently, electricity costs can account for as much as 40% to 50% of the total cost structure, making this the most critical cost component. Upstream processes?including spinning, pre-oxidation, and carbonization?along with equipment depreciation and labor costs, collectively account for the remaining 15% to 20%. Due to the extremely high temperature requirements for graphitization and the substantial capital investment required for equipment, the production cost of pitch-based graphitized carbon fiber is significantly higher than that of PAN-based carbon fiber. This is particularly true for ultra-high modulus products, where costs can reach 3 to 5 times those of PAN-based T700-grade carbon fiber; this high cost remains the primary bottleneck constraining its widespread commercial application.
