Volta River Authority (VRA) is a state-owned energy company. It carries out electricity generation through diverse fueled sources, and supplies to local and export market. The company owns and operates thermal and hydro power plants, namely, Akosombo Hydro Power Station, Kpong Hydro Power Station, the Takoradi Thermal Power Plant (TAPCO) at Aboadze and The Tema Thermal Power Complex. The company's electricity transmission function is carried out through designated National Grid Company (GRIDCo), which covers entire country and is connected to the national electricity grids of Compagnie Ivoirienne d'Electricite (CIE) of La Cote d'lvoire, (CEB) of Togo and Benin, and Sonabel of Burkina Faso. VRA's electricity distribution activities is carried out through its subsidiary namely, Northern Electricity Department (NEDCo). It also undertakes non-power activities such as operating schools, hospitals, transportation and others. The company undertakes power and non-power business through subsidiaries namely, Akosombo Hotel Limited, Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC), Akosomobo Hospital, Kpong Farms and VRA Real Estate. VRA is headquartered in Accra, Ghana.

The company’s investment focuses on energy-centric growth. It strives to expand generation portfolio by exploring alternative sources of generation to meet growing demand for energy in the country. To this end, VRA intends to re-gasify its liquefied natural gas plants to floating storage re-gasification unit (FSRU) with supply of gas directly to plants through pipeline; and planning for the development of a clean coal power plant.
