Vietnam paper and pulp industry factsheet
In the context of domestic pulp decreasing, Vietnam had to increase the pulp import in the first quarter of 2022. In particular, the domestic pulp supply could not meet the demand. As a result, imported pulp dominated the Vietnam market with a proportion of 65%.
Due to the low demand of paper manufacturing factories, as well as the discontinuity of production activities affected by COVID - 19 pandemic, in Quarter I of 2022, the production volume of pulp declined by 16.5% compared to the same period in 2021. Pulp imports from markets such as the United States and Indonesia continued to rise sharply.
In quarter I of 2022, due to a lack of input materials and high raw material costs, Vietnam's paper production volume fell by 3.5 percent over the same period. Meanwhile, a slight increase was recorded in paper consumption with an increase of 4.3%, of which packaging paper consumption was still the growth engine.
The supply-demand gap was expected to persist in 2022 if factors such as raw material shortages and high input costs could not be resolved, while demand for paper products would remain high as the economy gradually recovered.
