They are typically based on photosensitive polyimide, polybenzoxazole, or related precursor formulations, and form permanent insulating layers with patterning accuracy, dielectric isolation, stress buffering, passivation protection, and planarization functions through spin coating, soft baking, exposure, development, and thermal curing. Their core value lies in integrating conventional insulating film deposition and lithographic pattern transfer into a single material system, reducing masking, etching, and stripping steps while maintaining heat resistance, chemical resistance, low stress, adhesion, and dimensional stability on copper interconnects, silicon substrates, glass panels, and organic package substrates. Typical applications include redistribution layer dielectrics, chip buffer coatings, bump passivation layers, solder resist protection for high-density package substrates, structural materials for MEMS, and planarization insulation and pixel isolation in OLED and Micro-LED devices. Commercial supply is mainly in the form of liquid spin-on formulations, with extensions into photosensitive dry films and sheet-type insulating films, and the customer base mainly includes wafer fabs, advanced packaging houses, display panel makers, package substrate manufacturers, and electronic materials process platforms.

The industrial value of spin-on photo sensitive insulation materials is rising from conventional insulating and protective materials to key functional materials in advanced packaging and high-end display processes. As chip interconnect structures evolve from conventional packaging toward wafer-level packaging, panel-level packaging, and multi-chip integration, insulating layers no longer serve only as covering and protection layers. They also perform pattern opening, dielectric isolation, stress relief, surface planarization, and thermomechanical reliability control. These materials form permanent patterned insulating layers through spin coating, exposure, development, and curing, reducing additional etching and stripping steps, improving process integration, and providing stable process windows in redistribution layers, under-bump metallization, chip passivation, and display pixel isolation. The main technical barriers lie in resin molecular design, photosensitive reaction systems, development residue control, curing shrinkage, copper compatibility, low stress, and long-term reliability. Customer qualification cycles are long and certification barriers are high, giving the industry strong material stickiness and supply chain stability.

Product upgrading in this industry is mainly centered on high resolution, thick-film capability, low-temperature curing, environmentally compliant formulations, and multi-scenario adaptability. In advanced packaging, shrinking RDL line widths and spacings require higher pattern accuracy, opening integrity, adhesion, and electrical insulation reliability from dielectric layers. In display and Micro-LED applications, materials must meet requirements for planarization, pixel isolation, low defectivity, and large-area coating uniformity. In MEMS and specialized electronic devices, thick-film and high-aspect-ratio structural capability has become a source of differentiation.
