These precursors are designed to have controlled composition, morphology, and reactivity, and are subsequently converted—via calcination, reduction, or crystallization—into advanced functional materials such as metal oxides, sulfides, zeolites, nanomaterials, or battery cathodes. The supply chain begins with upstream raw materials, including metal salts (nitrates, chlorides, acetates), organic ligands, structure-directing agents, and high-purity solvents supplied by chemical companies; it then moves to midstream precursor synthesis, where specialty chemical manufacturers and material companies conduct solvothermal reactions in autoclaves to produce tailored precursors with specific particle size, porosity, and phase characteristics; finally, in the downstream stage, these precursors are supplied to end-use industries—such as energy storage (lithium-ion batteries), catalysis, electronics, ceramics, and environmental materials—where they are further processed into high-performance end products, making precursor quality and consistency critical for final material performance.
