The global Photoimageable Solder Mask Inks market size is predicted to grow from US$ 491 million in 2025 to US$ 763 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2026 to 2032.

Photoimageable solder mask ink is composed of alkali-soluble photo-curable resin, reactive diluent, photoinitiator, thermosetting resin, curing agent, pigment, filler, various additives and solvents. It is used for the manufacture of double-sided or multi-layer solder mask Graphical UV ink, which acts the same as UV solder mask ink, prevents unnecessary solder from attaching to the printed circuit board during wave soldering, and remains permanently on the printed circuit board to improve the gap between the lines and the entire board surface. Excellent electrical insulation, and at the same time, it can prevent the line from being oxidized, free from water vapor erosion and scratches by foreign objects, thereby prolonging the service life of the printed circuit board. The coating methods of photoimageable solder resist ink are as follows: screen printing method, curtain coating method, and spraying method. The screen printing method has relatively little investment and can be operated semi-automatically or manually, so the screen printing method is basically adopted in China, and most of them are semi-automatic or manual.

Key Findings

In 2025, global Photoimageable Solder Mask Inks production reached approximately 97,865 MT, with an average global market price of around US$ 5,128 per MT.

Conventional phototool exposure and Direct Imaging are the two principal exposure architectures for liquid photoimageable solder mask inks

Taiyo Holdings reports a global share of at least 53% in liquid solder resist indicating relatively high supplier concentration

Commercial Direct Imaging solder masks can achieve approximately 30–50 ?m solder-dam capability depending on formulation and process conditions

AI servers data centers automotive electronics HDI and advanced packaging are raising solder-mask reliability and resolution requirements

Market Trends

Photoimageable Solder Mask Inks is evolving from conventional phototool exposure toward higher-sensitivity Direct Imaging formulations, while product development is simultaneously moving toward finer solder dams, higher electrical reliability, greater thermal endurance, lower dielectric loss, improved flexibility and more environmentally optimized chemistry. Traditional alkaline-developable LPI remains deeply embedded in mass PCB production because screen, spray and curtain coating are established processes, while DI removes the physical phototool and improves digital alignment and production flexibility. Sun Chemical offers both conventional and DI Imagecure grades, Peters separates classical contact-exposure and DI Elpemer products, and Electra Polymers offers 355–405 nm Direct Image products with 50 ?m solder-dam capability. Chinese suppliers are also progressing rapidly: Jiangsu Kuangshun's DI series is positioned for multiple exposure systems with minimum solder dams around 2 mil, while Guangdong Coants provides dedicated DI formulations for rigid and flexible boards. Environmental reformulation is becoming another differentiator; Sun Chemical introduced an SVHC-free solder-mask range in 2025, while halogen-free, RoHS- and REACH-compliant formulations are increasingly standard for higher-end products. Functional differentiation is also expanding toward high-reflectance white materials for Mini LED, black low-gloss grades, high-temperature automotive formulations and low-Dk/Df materials for high-speed boards.

Market Dynamics

Drivers

Growth is increasingly driven by PCB complexity and reliability requirements rather than simple board-area expansion. Generative AI, AI servers, data centers and next-generation communications are increasing demand for higher-layer-count and high-density boards, while automotive electrification is expanding both PCB content per vehicle and requirements for thermal cycling, insulation reliability and long service life. Taiyo Holdings identifies AI servers, data centers, next-generation communications and vehicle electrification as medium- to long-term opportunities for solder resist, and its FY2026 electronics performance was supported by increased rigid and package-related product volumes. As component pitch shrinks, PCB manufacturers require narrower solder dams, more accurate registration, better resistance to ENIG and other surface-finishing chemistries, and stronger insulation under high temperature and humidity. The geographical concentration of PCB manufacturing further reinforces material demand: ZVEI places China and Southeast Asia at 84% of the 2024 PCB market structure. These trends favor suppliers that can combine high-resolution DI performance with stable coating, rapid exposure, low undercut and consistent electrical reliability in mass production.

Restraints

The main restraints are demanding customer qualification, narrow processing windows and technological competition from other permanent solder-mask formats. Because solder resist remains permanently on the PCB, material failure can affect solderability, insulation resistance, moisture resistance, thermal cycling and field reliability, making PCB manufacturers and downstream OEMs cautious when changing suppliers. Conventional LPI processing also requires coating, pre-drying, exposure, development and final curing, creating relatively high process-control and energy requirements. At the high-density end, dry-film solder mask offers improved thickness uniformity and surface flatness; Taiyo notes that dry-film solder resist can meet specifications beyond those of conventional liquid materials in advanced package substrates. Inkjet solder resist introduces another substitution pathway because material can be deposited only where needed and exposure/development steps can be reduced; Taiyo has already begun mass production of inkjet solder resist for automotive circuit boards. Therefore, liquid photoimageable inks must continue improving resolution, cost per good board, environmental performance and process productivity to defend their installed manufacturing base.

Opportunities

Direct Imaging is the clearest upgrade opportunity within the liquid photoimageable platform. Electra EMP110 DI supports laser and LED imaging from 355 to 405 nm with exposure energy down to 50–80 mJ/cm? and 50 ?m solder-dam capability, while Tamura has high-sensitivity photoimageable products targeting 30–50 ?m class solder dams in high-density and automotive boards. Jiangsu Kuangshun and Guangdong Coants have also commercialized DI/LDI-compatible products, demonstrating rapid localization of the technology in China. Flexible and rigid-flex PCBs represent a separate premium niche because the cured film must combine electrical insulation with bending endurance; Nippon Polytech, Greencure and Electra all maintain dedicated flexible photoimageable products. High-reflectance white materials are benefiting from Mini LED, display and lighting demand, while high-temperature and low-Dk/Df formulations create opportunities in EV power electronics, data centers and high-speed networking. Package substrates are another technically attractive extension: Taiyo maintains dedicated liquid photoimageable solder resist for IC package substrates, although the finest substrate structures increasingly compete with dry-film and advanced dielectric technologies.

Challenges

The central technical challenge is balancing high photosensitivity and very fine image definition with long-term cured-film reliability. Reducing DI exposure energy improves productivity, but the resulting film must still withstand lead-free soldering, plating chemicals, moisture, thermal cycling and extended electrical bias. Narrower solder dams amplify coating-thickness variation, development undercut, surface contamination and registration errors. Tamura has demonstrated approximately 30 ?m solder-dam resolution in selected black DI products, while Electra and Sun Chemical offer DI systems targeting approximately 50 ?m or below; achieving these dimensions consistently in volume production is materially more difficult than demonstrating them under laboratory conditions. Flexible products introduce another trade-off between hardness and elongation, while white solder masks require high pigment loading without excessive yellowing or loss of photosensitivity, and black inks must overcome strong optical absorption. Environmental reformulation creates further complexity because removing certain photoinitiators, halogens or SVHC substances can change photospeed, cure depth and final properties. Supplier competitiveness therefore depends heavily on raw-material consistency, precision dispersion and filtration, customer-specific formulation adjustment and on-site application engineering.

Industry Chain Analysis

The upstream chain consists of photoimageable acrylic and epoxy-acrylate resins, multifunctional monomers, photoinitiators, thermal-curing agents, pigments, inorganic fillers, solvents, adhesion promoters, leveling agents, defoamers, inhibitors and other functional additives. Resin and photochemical design determine photosensitivity, alkaline developability, adhesion, thermal resistance and insulation reliability, while pigment selection affects color, exposure characteristics and optical performance. Midstream manufacturers undertake resin synthesis or procurement, formulation design, mixing, milling and dispersion, precision filtration, viscosity and color control, filling and customer qualification. Taiyo notes that solder-resist production requires tightly controlled raw-material weighing, mixing and roll-milling processes and that several hundred formulations may be manufactured for different applications. At PCB factories, the liquid material is screen printed, sprayed or curtain coated, pre-dried, exposed by phototool or DI, alkaline developed and finally cured. Downstream customers include rigid PCB, FPC, rigid-flex, HDI and package-substrate manufacturers serving data centers, communications, automotive, consumer electronics, industrial equipment, medical electronics and semiconductor systems. Because solder mask is a permanent dielectric layer, its value contribution is driven primarily by PCB yield, insulation reliability and assembly performance rather than material consumption alone.

Segment Insights

Conventional products are applied and pre-dried before UV exposure through a physical negative phototool and subsequent alkaline development; this remains an established process for mass-produced rigid boards and many general-purpose applications. Direct Imaging Type is optimized for digitally controlled laser or LED exposure without physical artwork and generally emphasizes higher photosensitivity, faster exposure, finer registration and improved compatibility with high-density designs. Commercial evidence supports this split across multiple suppliers: Peters distinguishes contact-exposure and DI products, Sun Chemical offers conventional and DI Imagecure formulations, Jiangsu Kuangshun has dedicated LDI solder resist, Guangdong Coants has DI grades and Chung Yu explicitly identifies both traditional photomask and photomask-free exposure/development solder-mask systems.

Secondary classification should remain independent from exposure type. By coating method, the market can be analyzed as Screen Printing, Spray Coating and Curtain/Roller Coating grades. By substrate, suppliers differentiate Rigid PCB, Flexible/Rigid-Flex and Package-Substrate materials. By color and function, Green General-Purpose, Black/Matte Black, High-Reflectance White and Other Colors represent meaningful commercial categories. By performance, further overlays include Automotive/High-Temperature, Fine-Line/HDI, Flexible, Low-Dk/Df and Halogen-Free/SVHC-Free formulations. These dimensions should not be added together as separate market volumes; for example, a white DI solder mask used on an FPC remains one physical shipment despite belonging to multiple technical descriptors.

Downstream Market Opportunities

Rigid Printed Circuit Boards remain the largest and broadest application base for liquid photoimageable solder masks because conventional multilayer and high-layer-count rigid boards extensively use permanent solder resist. Flexible Printed Circuit Boards represent a technically differentiated segment requiring greater flexibility, low warpage and resistance to cracking; Nippon Polytech NPR-90, Greencure LM-600 TS and Electra EFP140 demonstrate dedicated FPC solutions. Rigid-Flex Printed Circuit Boards combine high-resolution imaging with mechanical-flexibility requirements and therefore favor higher-performance formulations. HDI Boards offer attractive value growth because fine-pitch assembly, dense interconnect structures and smaller openings increase the importance of Direct Imaging and fine solder-dam capability. HDI, however, is a technology attribute that can overlap with rigid and rigid-flex PCBs, so market statistics should apply a unique allocation rule to avoid double counting.
