Non-phosgene polycarbonate, also known as direct transesterification polycarbonate, is a method used to produce polycarbonate (PC). Traditional polycarbonate production uses phosgene as a reaction raw material, but phosgene is a toxic and harmful gas that poses environmental and worker safety risks. To reduce these risks, direct transesterification polycarbonates were developed. In this method, the transesterification reaction is directly used in the synthesis of polycarbonate, avoiding the use of phosgene. The production process includes preparation of raw materials, transesterification reaction, dehydration reaction and post-treatment, and finally obtains high-performance polycarbonate products. This method is widely used in the polycarbonate industry, which not only reduces environmental risks, but also improves the safety and efficiency of production.

The industrial production methods of polycarbonate mainly include interface polycondensation method, melt transesterification polycondensation method and non-phosgene melt transesterification polycondensation method. The first two types are also called 'phosgene method', and the latter type is 'Non-phosgene method'. The main factories using non-phosgene melt polymerization include Covestro Thailand Map Ta Phut polycarbonate plant, Covestro Krefeld polycarbonate plant and Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company Al-Jubail polycarbonate plant, Japan Asahi Kasei, China Shinghwa Advanced, etc. In terms of global production capacity, phosgene and semi-phosgene production capacity accounted for 65.96%; China's phosgene and semi-phosgene production capacity accounted for about 51% of the country's total production capacity. At present, the growth of demand in Asia has led to the rapid growth of polycarbonate production capacity in the world, and the production center has shifted to Asia, especially to developing countries such as China.
