Molecular weight regulators (MWRs) are molecules that are added to polymerization reactions in order to control the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the resulting polymer. MWRs act by terminating the polymerization reaction, preventing the formation of long polymer chains and resulting in a narrower molecular weight distribution.

MWRs can be classified into two categories: chain transfer agents (CTAs) and chain terminators (CTs). CTAs, as discussed previously, transfer the growing radical to a small molecule, which becomes a new radical initiator and results in the formation of a shorter polymer chain. CTs, on the other hand, completely terminate the polymerization reaction by irreversibly terminating the growing polymer chain.

Examples of MWRs include thiols, halogens, and oxygen. Thiols act as CTs by irreversibly terminating the polymerization reaction, while halogens and oxygen can act as both CTs and CTAs depending on the reaction conditions.

The use of MWRs allows for greater control over the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the final polymer product, which can have a significant impact on its properties and performance. For example, a narrower molecular weight distribution can result in improved mechanical properties, such as higher tensile strength and elongation at break, as well as improved processability and product consistency.

MWRs are commonly used in free radical polymerization reactions, which are used to produce a wide range of commercial polymers, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. In these reactions, the MWR is added at the beginning of the reaction to control the polymerization process and achieve the desired molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the final polymer product.
