Carbon fluoride typically refers to compounds of fluorine and carbon?most notably polycarbon monofluoride (or fluorinated graphite). It is a functional material characterized by ultra-low surface energy, high chemical stability, and high energy density; it is frequently utilized in applications such as lithium battery cathodes, solid lubricants, and high-performance corrosion-resistant coatings.

Kanto Denka Kogyo monopolizes Carbonyl Fluoride (CAS 353-50-4), holding a share over 80%. Japan is the largest market, with a share about 80%, followed by USA and Europe, both have a share over 15 percent. In terms of product, Purity?99% is the largest segment, with a share about 99%. The raw material system for carbon fluoride consists of three core components: high-purity graphite, fluorine gas (F?) or hydrogen fluoride (HF), and catalysts/additives. Graphite feedstock can be sourced from either natural graphite (flake graphite, expanded graphite) or synthetic graphite (graphitized products derived from petroleum coke or pitch coke). Natural graphite dominates the market due to its lower cost and abundant supply (with China accounting for over 70% of global production); however, battery-grade products impose stringent requirements on graphite purity, crystallinity, and interlayer spacing. Consequently, the production of battery-grade materials necessitates the selection of high-crystallinity, large-flake natural graphite or specialized synthetic graphite?raw materials that carry significantly higher costs than ordinary graphite. In 2024, the price of ordinary graphite ranged from approximately $300 to $600 per ton, whereas the price of battery-grade high-purity graphite could reach several thousand dollars per ton. Fluorine gas serves as the core reactant in the fluorination process and is produced via the electrolysis of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF). Given its extreme reactivity and toxicity, fluorine gas requires specialized high-pressure containers and strict safety protocols for storage and transportation. While the price of AHF typically ranges from $1,000 to $1,500 per ton, the electrolysis process required to generate fluorine gas is highly energy-intensive. Catalysts (such as metal fluorides like LiF and MgF?) are employed to enhance reaction selectivity and improve the electrical conductivity of the final product; although required in small quantities, these catalysts demand exceptionally high levels of purity. In terms of cost structure, raw material costs account for 40% to 55% of total costs, with high-purity graphite and fluorine/hydrogen fluoride representing the primary cost components. Processing costs account for 30% to 40%; the high-temperature fluorination reaction (300?600?C) must be conducted in corrosion-resistant reactors (typically nickel-based or Monel alloys), entailing substantial equipment investment and high maintenance costs. Furthermore, the reaction is highly exothermic, requiring precise temperature control and resulting in significant energy consumption. Purification and classification costs account for 10% to 15%, as battery-grade products require multi-stage screening, jet milling, and surface modification to achieve a precise particle size distribution. Additionally, safety and environmental protection costs are extremely high; the risk of fluorine gas leakage necessitates comprehensive containment, scrubbing, and monitoring systems. Investment in compliant production facilities often reaches tens of millions of US dollars, while expenses for waste gas treatment (specifically, the absorption of fluoride-containing tail gas) and solid waste disposal also constitute a significant proportion of costs. Collectively, these factors establish high technological barriers and stringent entry thresholds for the production of fluorinated graphite; consequently, only a select few enterprises globally possess the capability for large-scale production.
