Nonafluorobutane-1-sulfonic acid (PFBS, CAS 375-73-5) is a short-chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) within the broader PFAS family. Structurally, it contains a four-carbon perfluorobutyl (C4) chain attached to a sulfonic acid group (-SO?H), and in water it readily dissociates to the perfluorobutanesulfonate anion (PFBS?).

Industrially, PFBS is closely linked to its direct precursor perfluorobutane sulfonyl fluoride (PBSF / PFBSF), which serves as a starting intermediate; PBSF itself can be produced via electrochemical fluorination (ECF), and PFBS (and salts/derivatives) can be synthesized from PBSF (e.g., by hydrolysis and further derivatization). Downstream, PFBS is mainly valued as a PFBS-moiety building block for making salts and PFBS-related surfactants/polymers, with reported application areas including water and stain-repellent treatments for leather/textiles/carpets and porous surfaces, mist suppressants in metal (chromium) plating, and specialty surfactants for electronics/semiconductor process chemicals and fluxes.
