Dimethyl Pyrocarbonate, abbreviated as DMDC and also known as Velcorin, is a highly effective, broad-spectrum cold sterilizing agent and preservative primarily used in the beverage industry. It penetrates microbial cell membranes and effectively kills yeasts, molds, and bacteria without affecting the flavor, texture, or color of beverages. It is widely used in fruit juices, tea beverages, and wines.

The upstream core raw materials mainly include methyl chloroformate, sodium hydroxide or organic bases (such as triethylamine), and solvents. Methyl chloroformate is produced by the reaction of phosgene with methanol. Due to the involvement of phosgenation processes, the upstream segment faces extremely high environmental and safety access restrictions.

In 2025, global sales are projected to be approximately 15,000 tons, with an average market price of approximately US$4,327 per ton. The industry's gross profit margin is in the range of 15%–30%.

Due to its ability to rapidly decompose into trace amounts of carbon dioxide and methanol after sterilization, leaving no residual odor, DMDC is widely recognized as one of the best technical solutions currently available for cold sterilization of beverages while preserving their natural flavor. As hot filling technology is gradually being replaced by aseptic and cold filling due to its high energy consumption and tendency to damage flavor, the demand for DMDC is increasing linearly with the proliferation of aseptic production lines. At the same time, the rise of low-alcohol beverages (such as low-alcohol fruit wines and craft ciders) has opened up a huge market for DMDC in the alcoholic beverage sector, as these products have extremely high technical requirements for preventing secondary fermentation.
