Markets for geosynthetic products and profiles of five leading manufacturers
The term geosynthetic is used to describe a product which is made from one or more planar polymeric materials used in civil engineering applications in contact with rock, soil or other geotechnical material such as concrete or asphalt. Geosynthetic products are most commonly used in separation, reinforcement, filtration, drainage and containment applications. The manufacture and use of geosynthetic products started to increase significantly in the late 1960s when European textile manufacturers were spurred to seek new markets for their products as markets for conventional textiles started to decline in the face of competition from lower cost countries. Over the next 20 years, the range of geosynthetic products available on the market widened and their quality improved significantly-to the extent that, today, the use of geosynthetics in civil engineering projects is mandatory in many applications. This report assesses the markets for geosynthetic products in developed countries and emerging markets, as well as important end use sectors. It also includes detailed information on the development of geosynthetic products and describes in detail the processes used to manufacture different types of geosynthetic products and their applications. Furthermore, the report provides a profile of each of five prominent suppliers of geosynthetics, namely Fiberweb, GSE Environmental, Propex, Royal Ten Cate and TMP Geosynthetics.
