Oxalic acid is an organic compound with the formula C2H2O4. It is a colorless crystalline solid that forms a colorless solution in water. Its condensed formula is HOOCCOOH, reflecting its classification as the simplest dicarboxylic acid. Its acid strength is much greater than that of acetic acid. Oxalic acid is a reducing agent and its conjugate base, known as oxalate is a chelating agent for metal cations. Excessive ingestion of oxalic acid or prolonged skin contact can be dangerous. Oxalic acid is an organic compound having many uses in different industries, such as in pharmaceutical industry for production of medicines like tetracycline, aureomycin, oxytetracycline and others; as a bleaching agents for straw hats; in laundries for removing color, paint, iron rust stains, varnish, and ink stains; in calico printing and dyeing; in dyeing and calico printing. Oxalic acid is also used for metal polishing and wood cleaning. It is also used in the leather tanning process and as a precipitating agent in the Rare Earth's industry.
