1. INTRODUCTION

Dimethyl oxalate, as a superior product in fine chemical industry, tends to rise in China. In 2015, dimethyl oxalate output reached 12.3 thousand tonnes, rising by 41.38% comparing to the output of 2011, which was 8.7 thousand tonnes. It is predicted that the output in 2021 will rise to 21 thousand tonnes.

In China, coal takes more shares than petroleum in the energy structure, which leads more cost of petroleum preparation of ethylene glycol and research for new preparation of ethylene glycol becomes a hot point. Replacing petroleum with coal is a better way to make use of resources and could reduce dependency on petroleum. The advantage of coal preparation is RMB500-1,500 lower energy consumption and lower emission, which contributes to industrial production.

As catalytic technology is advancing, research for new and high-efficient catalysts will certainly push industrial application of coal preparation of ethylene glycol to a brand new phase, thus the need for ethylene glycol will be relaxed. Rich channels of dimethyl oxalate application not only lower the preparation cost for ethylene glycol, but also meet the need for green innovation. Meanwhile, the future market will tend to explode.
