India’s generation mix since the advent of the portfolio has been dominated by coal based assets. Given, the humongous demand of the country courtesy a north bound trajectory forecasted by the global institutions like IMF, Fitch and World Bank, the country looks poised for adding more to its power generation basket . It is indeed arguable that India scales double digit economic growth in the near future or not, having said that the quantum of power required to address the cumulative and inclusive peripheral growth has to be in the order of 12-15 GW per annum. Though, thermal power shall still be the leader in terms of addressing the need of the country it is imperative take note of the paradigm shift observed in the generation portfolio mix post 2014. The current government’s initiatives has embarked concrete avenues for renewable energy capacities from solar and wind power. Given , all the intermittent challenges like huge Capex requirement , environmental considerations and skilled manpower etc, India’s hydro sector looks to gain as well from the fillip observed in the country for clean energy generation. Erstwhile, the hydro (LHP) & small hydro (SHP) segment of India was caught like a “Spider in its Own Web” having to deal with regressive capacity addition owing to faulty clearance nod and poor planning. In the current pretext and growing need for cheaper power, generation sources in the country. Hydro and small hydro power can (arguably) serve India to meet its peak power demand.

Hence, time was right to acknowledge the triggers for business case of LHP and SHP in India demanding an in-depth research based prognosis to demystify opportunities around same.
