The global Urea market size is predicted to grow from US$ 74177 million in 2025 to US$ 75562 million in 2032; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 0.1% from 2026 to 2032.

Urea is a nitrogen-containing chemical compound with the molecular formula CO(NH?)? and is one of the most widely produced and traded nitrogen fertilizer products. Commercial urea is synthesized from ammonia and carbon dioxide, and fertilizer-grade urea typically contains approximately 46% nitrogen, giving it the highest nitrogen concentration among widely used solid nitrogen fertilizers. This study focuses on commercially produced urea supplied to agricultural, industrial and automotive markets. From a production perspective, urea can be differentiated by upstream ammonia feedstock into natural gas-based urea, coal-based urea and other feedstock routes, with natural gas-based production prevailing across many major international production regions while coal-based capacity remains particularly important in China. In terms of physical form, the market primarily covers granular urea and prilled urea, supplemented by technical-grade and other differentiated grades. Major applications include direct agricultural fertilization and fertilizer blending, industrial chemical production such as resins and melamine, and high-purity urea used in automotive selective catalytic reduction solutions. Product economics are closely linked to ammonia production costs, feedstock availability, energy efficiency, plant scale, granulation technology and regional logistics.

Key Findings

Global urea production reached approximately 201 million metric tons in 2024, increasing about 3% year on year

East Asia and South Asia together account for more than half of global nitrogen fertilizer use in 2025/26

Agriculture remains the core demand base, while industrial and automotive applications create differentiated value opportunities

Production economics remain highly feedstock-sensitive, with natural gas dominant internationally and coal-based routes important in China

Low-carbon ammonia, technical-grade urea and enhanced-efficiency products are becoming increasingly important areas of product differentiation

Market Trends

The urea industry is gradually evolving from a market centered almost entirely on standardized bulk fertilizer toward a structure combining commodity-scale production with differentiated, lower-carbon and application-specific products. Conventional granular and prilled urea will continue to form the core of the market because of their high nitrogen concentration, mature production technology, established logistics system and broad agricultural applicability. At the same time, producers are placing greater emphasis on stabilized urea, enriched fertilizer products, technical-grade urea and products manufactured from lower-carbon ammonia. The expansion of technical-grade and differentiated urea offerings among major producers illustrates the broader shift toward application-specific nitrogen products. Decarbonization is increasingly moving upstream into ammonia production through energy-efficiency upgrades, carbon capture, low-carbon hydrogen and renewable-energy pathways. However, conventional natural gas- and coal-based capacity will remain central to global supply in the foreseeable future because many emerging low-carbon projects still face cost, infrastructure and commercialization constraints. Fertilizer capacity investment is expected to remain active during the medium term, while the pace of decarbonization will continue to differ significantly across regions.

Market Dynamics

Drivers

The fundamental demand driver for urea remains the need to maintain agricultural productivity and food security as population, food consumption and crop-yield requirements increase. Nitrogen represents the largest nutrient category in global fertilizer consumption, and East Asia and South Asia remain the principal centers of nitrogen fertilizer demand. Government fertilizer policies also have a significant influence on demand stability, particularly in China and India, where food-security objectives, fertilizer affordability mechanisms and supply-management policies support nitrogen fertilizer consumption. Beyond agriculture, continued production of resins, melamine and other nitrogen-containing chemicals, together with demand for automotive SCR reducing agents, provides additional demand channels and supports higher-value grades.

Restraints

Urea production is highly energy- and feedstock-intensive, making production economics sensitive to natural gas, coal, electricity and ammonia costs. Natural gas is simultaneously a feedstock and energy source for gas-based ammonia production, while coal-based producers are exposed to coal prices, gasification efficiency, environmental compliance and electricity costs. Consequently, regional cost competitiveness can change materially when energy prices move sharply. High feedstock costs have contributed to capacity closures and intermittent operating reductions in parts of Western Europe. On the demand side, fertilizer affordability limits farmers' application rates when urea prices rise faster than crop prices. Environmental pressure associated with greenhouse-gas emissions from ammonia production and nitrogen losses during fertilizer application is also increasing compliance costs and encouraging more efficient nutrient management, which can constrain growth in conventional urea consumption per hectare.

Opportunities

The largest structural opportunity lies in improving the value proposition of urea rather than relying solely on expansion of conventional commodity capacity. Low-carbon ammonia combined with carbon capture can reduce the embedded carbon intensity of urea and potentially create differentiated products for customers subject to increasingly stringent emissions requirements. At the downstream level, stabilized urea, inhibitor-treated products and other enhanced-efficiency formulations can improve nitrogen-use efficiency and reduce volatilization losses, supporting higher-value product portfolios. Industrial and technical-grade urea also provide opportunities outside traditional fertilizer cycles, particularly in resins, chemical synthesis and emissions-control applications. Investment opportunities are particularly relevant in regions with competitively priced natural gas, integrated ammonia infrastructure, access to carbon-storage resources and export terminals. Future competitiveness will increasingly combine feedstock advantage, plant scale, energy efficiency and carbon-management capability rather than relying on low energy cost alone.

Challenges

Urea remains a globally traded commodity, making producers exposed not only to local production economics but also to international trade policy, freight availability, geopolitical risks and changes in export supply from major producing countries. Temporary export controls, sanctions, natural gas supply interruptions and maritime logistics disruptions can rapidly alter regional availability and benchmark pricing. Fertilizer-market conditions demonstrate that geopolitical events can affect both feedstock flows and finished fertilizer trade, while farmers' purchasing decisions respond quickly to changes in crop-to-fertilizer affordability. Another long-term challenge is the tension between expanding nitrogen supply for food security and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and nitrogen losses. Producers therefore need to manage capital expenditure on cleaner technologies without losing cost competitiveness in a commodity market. At the same time, new low-carbon projects face uncertainties related to hydrogen economics, carbon infrastructure, certification standards and customers' willingness to pay premiums.

Industry Chain Analysis

The urea industry chain begins with energy and feedstock resources. Natural gas-based plants reform methane to produce hydrogen for ammonia synthesis, while coal-based plants use gasification to generate synthesis gas; ammonia is subsequently reacted with carbon dioxide to produce urea. As a result, the economics of the upstream ammonia unit frequently determine the cost competitiveness of the entire urea complex. Natural gas price, coal quality, energy consumption, hydrogen production efficiency, carbon dioxide integration and plant operating rates are critical cost variables. Large integrated plants generally benefit from scale, continuous operation and better utilization of heat and material streams.

The midstream stage includes urea synthesis, concentration, prilling or granulation, quality control, storage and bulk logistics. Granular urea generally provides strong particle strength and handling characteristics for bulk transportation, blending and mechanized fertilizer application, while prilled urea remains established in a number of agricultural and industrial markets. Downstream distribution extends through fertilizer wholesalers, agricultural retailers and direct industrial customers to farms, compound fertilizer producers, resin and melamine manufacturers, emissions-control solution suppliers and other chemical users. Value creation therefore differs by business model: commodity producers rely heavily on feedstock cost, plant scale, operating reliability and export logistics, whereas producers serving industrial, technical-grade or enhanced-efficiency applications can capture additional value through purity control, formulation capability, certification and customer-specific supply services.

Segment Insights

By feedstock, natural gas-based urea represents the prevailing production route across major exporting regions in the Middle East, North America, Russia and a number of other gas-rich economies. Its competitiveness is strongly associated with access to reliable and competitively priced natural gas. Coal-based urea is particularly important in China, where extensive coal resources, mature coal-gasification technology and large integrated chemical complexes support substantial production capacity. The two routes therefore create distinct regional cost structures: gas-based producers are highly exposed to natural gas pricing and availability, while coal-based producers face coal, electricity, gasification and environmental costs. Several diversified Chinese producers operate different feedstock configurations across production bases, making company-level classification more complex than a single coal-or-gas label.

By product form, granular urea and prilled urea constitute the principal commercial categories. Granular urea is particularly well suited to bulk handling, mechanized spreading and fertilizer blending and is an important product in international trade; prilled urea maintains a significant position in markets with established prilling capacity and also supports selected technical applications. By application, agriculture accounts for the dominant demand base because urea combines high nitrogen concentration with broad crop applicability and established distribution infrastructure. Industrial and automotive applications represent smaller volumes but provide attractive differentiation through technical specifications, purity requirements and customer qualification, reducing direct exposure to commodity fertilizer pricing for qualified suppliers.

Downstream Market Opportunities

Agriculture will remain the central downstream market, but future opportunities increasingly depend on improving nutrient-use efficiency rather than simply increasing fertilizer application rates. Precision fertilization, optimized timing and placement, stabilized urea and enhanced-efficiency products can help farmers reduce nitrogen losses while maintaining crop yields. Improvement in nitrogen-use efficiency is becoming an increasingly important long-term objective for the fertilizer industry, reinforcing the shift toward more efficient nutrient management. Outside agriculture, industrial urea demand is supported by applications in urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine and other chemical intermediates, while high-purity automotive-grade material is used in diesel SCR systems through urea solutions such as AUS 32 and DEF. These markets are substantially smaller than fertilizer demand but can provide higher specification barriers and more stable customer relationships. Technical-grade products, customized particle characteristics and certified lower-carbon urea therefore represent important opportunities for producers seeking to diversify away from purely benchmark-driven fertilizer sales.

Regional Insights

Asia is the core global demand center for nitrogen fertilizers. In the 2025/26 fertilizer year, East Asia accounts for approximately 31% and South Asia for around 24% of world nitrogen fertilizer use, meaning the two regions together represent more than half of global nitrogen consumption. China combines very large domestic demand with a substantial production base dominated by coal-based and integrated chemical capacity, while India combines large agricultural demand with domestic production and significant import requirements. Government policy plays an unusually important role in both markets, affecting domestic pricing, subsidies, operating rates and international trade availability.

On the supply side, the Middle East, Russia and other gas-rich regions have important structural advantages from competitively priced natural gas and large export-oriented ammonia-urea complexes. North America also benefits from a gas-based production system and substantial integrated nitrogen capacity. Western Europe has a structurally higher exposure to natural gas costs and has experienced capacity rationalization when regional energy economics deteriorated. These differences mean that global urea trade performs an important balancing function between resource-advantaged exporting regions and large agricultural importing markets, while freight routes, trade restrictions and geopolitical conditions can materially change regional price spreads.

Competitive Landscape Analysis

The global urea market combines large international nitrogen producers, national or state-linked fertilizer groups and regionally integrated coal or gas chemical companies. Confirmed producers in the international market include Yara International ASA, CF Industries Holdings, Inc., Qatar Fertiliser Company, SABIC, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited, EuroChem Group AG, PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur, Koch, Inc., Acron Group, Notore Chemical Industries Plc and Profertil S.A., while China's supply base includes China National Petroleum Corporation, Shanxi Lu'an Chemical Technology Co., Ltd., China Coal Energy Company Limited, China XLX Fertiliser Ltd., Hubei Yihua Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Shandong Hualu-Hengsheng Chemical Co., Ltd., Inner Mongolia Berun Chemical Company Limited, Yunnan Yuntianhua Co., Ltd., North Huajin Chemical Industries Co., Ltd., Sichuan Lutianhua Company Limited, Sichuan Meifeng Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Anhui Jinmei Zhongneng Chemical Industrial Co., Ltd., Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd., Ruixing Group Company Limited and Shanxi Tianze Coal Chemical Group Co., Ltd. Competition is primarily determined by feedstock economics, ammonia integration, operating reliability, plant scale, logistics access and proximity to end markets rather than by product branding. Gas-rich exporters generally compete through low-cost gas and export infrastructure, while leading Chinese coal-based producers rely on integrated coal chemical platforms, modern gasification and large-scale operations. Product differentiation is increasing around technical-grade, stabilized and lower-carbon products, but conventional fertilizer-grade urea remains highly commoditized. Corporate restructuring and ownership changes can also reshape regional supply positions, making asset-level production capability more meaningful than group-level company names when assessing competitive capacity.
