Submarines need large amounts of electricity to operate safely under water. They charge their batteries using diesel or nuclear-driven generators. Diesel subs must surface to recycle their batteries because carbon monoxide fumes are deadly. Nuclear ones can remain under water for months and even years.

Internationally, the submarine battery market is highly concentrated, primarily in developed countries like Europe and America. Large manufacturers include EnerSys and Stryten Energy. Domestically, however, the submarine battery market still has significant room for growth.

Manufacturing Technology and Market Trends: Submarine battery technology is progressing along the main trend of migrating from lead-acid to lithium-ion batteries. Representative submarines such as the Daewoung-class, Soryu-class, later-stage Phoenix-class, Denglong, and Indonesian Scorp?ne Evolution have successfully tested both lithium manganese oxide and lithium iron phosphate battery lines. At the cell level, optimization of positive electrode thermal stability and electrolyte modification are used to mitigate the risk of high-temperature runaway. At the system level, two configurations are employed: pressure-resistant steel shell encapsulation or oil-filled pressure compensation, to withstand the pressure of deep-sea static water. Multi-stage fuses and immersion liquid cooling form an explosion-proof base. On the AIP (Air-Independent Propulsion) route, the German 212 series and the Korean KSS-III use proton exchange membrane fuel cells with alloy hydrogen storage or methanol reforming, creating a coexistence with lithium batteries rather than a one-way replacement.

The global market is being driven by both the expansion of naval forces and the replacement of conventional submarines. New orders in the Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia tend to favor all-lithium batteries over AIP in order to simplify logistics and improve high-speed sprint capabilities. Europe continues to promote fuel cell AIP for export to customers in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. The operational logic is shifting from low-speed stationary positions to a dynamic strike mode of sprinting, drifting, and then re-lurking. This, in turn, forces battery manufacturers and shipyards to achieve vertical integration from battery cells to submersible sections. The boundaries of domestic production and dual-use deep-sea lithium batteries are also being further expanded by the 10,000-meter sea trials of scientific research submersibles.
