Lanthanum has wide-spread applications in cracking reaction in Fluidic Catalytic Cracking (FCC) catalysts in order to manufacture high-octane gasoline from crude oil. Its application lies in hydrogen storage batteries. Lanthanum fluoride is an essential component of heavy fluoride glass which exhibits an excellent transmittance property in the infrared range and hence is used in optical fiber communication systems. Lanthanum trifluoride has a significant usage in phosphor lamp coatings. Lanthanum oxide and lanthanum boride are used as hot cathode materials in electronic vacuum tubes with massive emissivity of electrons. Lanthanum oxides are also used in manufacturing lenses used in telescopes and cameras. Lanthanum is also used in the manufacturing of hybrid cars that use nickel-metal hydride batteries.
