Extrusion coatings are coatings of a molten web of synthetic resin on substrates; used on cellulose, paper, paperboard, aluminum foils, corrugated fiberboard, and plastic films. The actual process of extrusion coating involves the direct extrusion of resin from a slot die at temperatures up to 320°C. It may then be passed through a nip with rubber covered pressure roller and chrome-plated cooling roll. The Extrusion Coating market has given an advanced technology for the method of packaging in various end-user industries to protect end products against moisture, rain, dust, temperature variations, cracks, etc. Extrusion coatings are estimated to become an outstanding alternative to aseptic flexible bricks, and also used in pillow-like small pouches for disposable and medicinal items, vacuum packaging for pet food and coffee, tubes for cosmetics and personal care products, etc. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate are few polymers used in extrusion coating, with LDPE being the most common for the enthralling properties it possesses.

According to BlueQuark Research & Consulting, the global extrusion coatings market is expected to witness a considerable growth rate during the forecast period. The accelerating demand from the packaging industry, especially liquid packaging, like in the food and beverage industry, bag in box, caps & closures is likely to drive the growth of the market. Flexible packaging is used in food packaging such as for bakery goods, frozen food, dairy products, meat & poultry, candy, and cookies. Flexible packaging provides various advantages such as lower cost, longer shelf life, consumer friendliness, environment friendliness, and the capability to retain the freshness of products. Packaging of liquid foods demands design flexibility, printability, looks, feel, and sustainability, among other features, which the extrusion coating offers. A rise in additive manufacturing process familiarity and environment-friendly coating technologies is expected to aid market growth. Growing demand for moisture and grease resistance, and oxygen, water vapor, temperature resistance, abrasion resistance, and aroma barrier packaging is also among the major driving factors. The fact that it can be used for decorative as well as protective purposes, with the latter being the more common application, helps in the rising demand for extrusion coating. However, higher cost and dry film thickness compared to other coatings, contribution to carbon footprint, and fluctuating raw material costs are some of the challenges that restrain the global extrusion coatings market growth.

Asia-Pacific is the largest market for the global extrusion coatings market, owing to the growth in economies of countries like China and India. People receive higher disposable incomes year after year. The growth of population and the subsequent growth in industrial sectors using extrusion coating such as automotive, construction, packaging industry, and medical are major factors in the regional market growth. Advantages, such as consumer friendly, long-shelf life and green packaging, among others, are estimated to increase its application in the medical, pharmaceutical and industrial sectors. Chinese government’s push for more infrastructure investment, to sustain the economic growth, the construction industry is growing rapidly in China, resulting in increase in demand for industrial packaging, thereby driving the Extrusion Coatings market. In India, the industrial sector is witnessing a rapid growth in the past few years, with the goal of making the country the fifth-largest manufacturing country in the world, with the help of Make in India drive. India is becoming the hub for manufacturing, which is expected to drive the growth of the Extrusion Coatings market in the region. Food & Beverage and cosmetic industries is witnessing positive growth in the Asia-Pacific Region with upcoming investment and government support which influences the regional extrusion coatings market positively.

The nature of the global extrusion coatings market is fragmented. The major companies include LyondellBasell Industries Holdings, Celanese Corporation, DuPont de Nemours, Sherwin-Williams Company, and, among others.
