Bio-based acrylic acid is acrylic acid produced from renewable biomass resources or bio-derived intermediates, with the chemical formula CH?=CHCOOH and the same molecular structure as conventional fossil-based acrylic acid. It contains both a carboxyl group and a vinyl double bond, allowing it to be used in acrylic esters, superabsorbent polymers, coating resins, adhesives, dispersants, thickeners, water-treatment polymers and other acrylic functional materials. Depending on production and certification routes, bio-based acrylic acid may include products directly converted from renewable sugars, vegetable oils, glycerol, lactic acid or 3-hydroxypropionic acid, as well as bio-attributed acrylic acid or acrylic monomers supplied through certified mass-balance systems. In 2025, global Bio-based Acrylic Acid production reached approximately 86 MT.

Demand for bio-based acrylic acid is mainly driven by the need to decarbonize large-volume acrylic value chains without changing downstream product performance. Acrylic acid is an important building block for superabsorbent polymers, acrylate esters, coatings, adhesives, water-treatment polymers and construction chemicals. Many of these applications already have mature formulations and strict performance requirements, so downstream customers prefer renewable alternatives that can be used as drop-in substitutes rather than materials that require complete reformulation. Because bio-based acrylic acid has the same core molecular structure as conventional acrylic acid, it can potentially reduce reliance on fossil feedstocks while maintaining the reactivity, polymerization behavior and end-use performance expected by existing customers.

Consumer goods, hygiene products, coatings and adhesives are important demand pull areas. Brand owners and chemical formulators are under increasing pressure to reduce product carbon footprints, improve renewable content and support sustainability claims across packaging, diapers, personal care, paints, sealants and pressure-sensitive adhesives. In these applications, acrylic acid is often embedded deep in the supply chain, so bio-based or bio-attributed acrylic acid can help downstream companies improve the sustainability profile of finished products without changing the visible product format. This makes the material attractive for companies seeking lower-carbon raw materials while maintaining established production assets, regulatory approvals and customer performance standards.

Technology development and supply-chain certification are also shaping the market. Direct biological or catalytic routes from renewable feedstocks are still technically demanding, especially when high purity, stable cost and large-scale reliability are required. At the same time, mass-balance certification provides a practical transition route for existing acrylic acid producers to introduce renewable feedstock attributes through current production infrastructure.
