Bio-based acrylic acid is acrylic acid produced from renewable biomass resources or bio-derived intermediates, with the chemical formula CH?=CHCOOH and the same molecular structure as conventional fossil-based acrylic acid. It contains both a carboxyl group and a vinyl double bond, allowing it to be used in acrylic esters, superabsorbent polymers, coating resins, adhesives, dispersants, thickeners, water-treatment polymers and other acrylic functional materials. Depending on production and certification routes, bio-based acrylic acid may include products directly converted from renewable sugars, vegetable oils, glycerol, lactic acid or 3-hydroxypropionic acid, as well as bio-attributed acrylic acid or acrylic monomers supplied through certified mass-balance systems. In 2025, global Bio-based Acrylic Acid production reached approximately 86 MT.

Demand for bio-based acrylic acid is mainly driven by the need to decarbonize large-volume acrylic value chains without changing downstream product performance. Acrylic acid is an important building block for superabsorbent polymers, acrylate esters, coatings, adhesives, water-treatment polymers and construction chemicals.
