The company serves approximately two million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

As of December 31, 2009, the company owned or operated a network of 134 solid waste collection operations, 55 transfer stations, 37 recycling operations and 43 active landfills. In addition, it provided intermodal services for the rail haul movement of cargo and solid waste containers in the Pacific Northwest through a network of six intermodal facilities.


Residential, Commercial and Industrial Collection Services

The company serves approximately two million residential, commercial and industrial customers from operations in 26 states. Its services are provided under various arrangements, such as governmental certificates; franchise agreements; municipal contracts; residential subscriptions; residential contracts; and commercial and industrial service agreements.

The company provides residential solid waste services, other than those it performs under arrangements, under contracts with homeowners’ associations, apartment owners, mobile home park operators or on a subscription basis with individual households. It provides commercial and industrial services, other than those it performs under customer service agreements ranging from one to five years in duration.

Landfill Disposal Services

The company owns solid waste landfills to achieve vertical integration in markets where the economic and regulatory environments make landfill ownership attractive. It owns landfills in California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. Transfer Station Services

The company has a program to acquire, develop, own and operate transfer stations in markets proximate to its collection operations. Transfer stations receive, compact and load solid waste to be transported to landfills via truck, rail or barge. Transfer stations extend its direct-haul reach and link collection operations with distant disposal facilities. As of December 31, 2009, the company owned or operated 55 transfer stations. The company owns transfer stations in California, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. In addition, it operates transfer stations in Idaho, Kentucky, Nebraska, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming.

Recycling Services

The company offers residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers recycling services for various recyclable materials, including cardboard, office paper, plastic containers, glass bottles, and ferrous and aluminum metals. It owns or operates 37 recycling processing operations and sells other collected recyclable materials to third parties for processing before resale.


Intermodal logistics is the movement of containers using two or more modes of transportation, including a rail or truck segment. The company has entered the intermodal services business in the Pacific Northwest through the acquisition of Northwest Container Services, Inc., which provides repositioning, storage, maintenance and repair of cargo containers for international shipping companies. It provides these services for containerized cargo primarily to international shipping companies importing and exporting goods through the Pacific Northwest. It also operates two intermodal facilities primarily for the shipment of waste by rail to distant disposal facilities that are not owned or operated by Waste Connections. As of December 31, 2009, the company owned or operated six intermodal operations in Washington and Oregon. Its fleet of double-stack railcars provides direct-line haul services among terminals in Portland, Tacoma, and Seattle. The company has contracts with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads for the movement of containers among its six intermodal operations. It also provides its customers container and chassis sales and leasing services.
