Market Area

The company has full service branches in Auburn, Augusta, Bethel, Brunswick, Buckfield, Harrison, Lewiston, Poland, Portland and South Paris, Maine. Its investment brokerage division has an office in Falmouth, Maine from which investment, insurance and financial planning products and services are offered. NBIG has offices in Auburn, Anson, Augusta, Berwick, Bethel, Jackman, Livermore Falls, Scarborough, South Paris, Thomaston, and Turner, Maine where its insurance division offers personal and commercial casualty and property insurance products.

Lending Activities

The company’s primary lending activities are the origination and purchase of conventional mortgages for the purpose of constructing, financing, or re-financing one-to-four family residential properties and commercial properties. It also offers commercial and consumer loans. It also originates loans to small businesses in association with the small business administration, rural development administration and finance authority of maine. Consumer loans include those for the purchase of automobiles, boats, home improvements, and personal investments.

Residential Lending: The company originates single-family residential mortgage loans collateralized by owner-occupied property. It offers various mortgage loan products. Its originations generally consist of adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) or fixed rate mortgage loans having terms of 15 years or 30 years. It also offers home equity loans and home equity lines of credit.

Commercial Real Estate Lending: The company originates both multi-family and commercial real estate loans. Its permanent commercial real estate loans are secured by improved property, such as office buildings, medical facilities, retail centers, warehouses, apartment buildings, condominiums and other types of buildings, which are located in its primary market area.

Commercial Lending: The company offers various commercial loan services, including term loans, lines of credit and equipment and receivables financing. Commercial loans are originated for commercial construction, acquisition, remodeling and general business purposes. A range of short-to-medium term commercial loans, both collateralized and uncollateralized, are made available to businesses for working capital (including the support of inventory and receivables), business expansion (including acquisitions of real estate and improvements), and the purchase of equipment and machinery. Equipment loans are typically originated on both a one year line of credit basis and on a fixed-term basis ranging from one to five years.

Consumer Loans: The company’s consumer loans include automobiles, recreational vehicles, boats, second mortgages, home improvements, mobile home loans, home equity lines of credit, personal (collateralized and uncollateralized) and deposit account collateralized loans. Its consumer loan portfolio consists primarily of loans to individuals for various consumer purposes. It also includes business purpose loans, such as small trucks and automobiles. Indirect automobile lending consists of automobile loans made by the company through the purchase of contracts from automobile dealers.

Construction Loans: The company originates residential construction loans to finance the construction of single-family dwellings. Majority of the residential construction loans are made to individuals who intend to erect owner-occupied housing on a purchased parcel of real estate. Construction loans also are made to contractors to erect single-family dwellings for resale. It also offers residential construction loans to real estate developers for the acquisition, development and construction of residential subdivisions.

Investment Portfolio

As of June 30, 2010, the company’s investment portfolio included debt securities issued by U.S. government-sponsored enterprises; mortgage-backed securities; municipal bonds; corporate bonds; collateralized mortgage obligations; equity securities; and trust preferred securities.

Deposits

As of June 30, 2010, the company’s deposits included demand deposits; NOW accounts; money market accounts; regular savings; and certificates of deposit and brokered time deposits.
