About Arlington Asset Investment Corp.

Arlington Asset Investment Corp. invests in mortgage-related assets. The company acquires and holds residential mortgage-backed securities (MBS), which are either issued by a U.S. government agency, or guaranteed as to principal and interest by the U.S. government agencies or the U.S. government-sponsored entities.

The company also acquires and holds mortgage-backed securities issued by private organizations. In addition, it holds merchant banking opportunities, including investments in equity securities, mezzanine debt, and senior loans.

Principal Investing Business

As of December 31, 2009, the majority of the company’s principal acquisitions activity consists of acquiring and holding agency-backed MBS, on a leveraged basis, and private-label MBS, generally on a non-leveraged basis. On a limited basis, it also manages merchant banking holdings, including interest in equity securities, mezzanine debt and senior loans.

The company acquires direct interests in residential MBS guaranteed as to principal and interest by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or Ginnie Mae (referred to as agency-backed MBS). It also acquires and holds non-agency private-label MBS.

Discontinued Operation

In 2009, the company sold its interest in FBR Capital Markets Corporation, which provided capital raising services, financial advisory services, institutional sales and trading services, research coverage, asset management services, private wealth management services and investment in merchant banking and other direct investments.

Tax Status

The company has elected to be taxed as a REIT under Sections 856 through 860 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. As a REIT, the company generally distributes approximately 90% of its net taxable income and would not be subject to federal income tax on income that it distributes to its stockholders.
