Summary

“City Profile - Stockholm” provides historical and forecast data on key city level metrics along with analytical coverage of the latest political, economic, social, technological, infrastructural, legal and environmental issues affecting Stockholm.

The report contains detailed tourism, retail, construction, technology and public infrastructure data and insight into economic, social, and industry trends.

Stockholm metropolitan area (also referred to as Greater Stockholm) is Sweden’s leading economic, commercial and business hub and the largest metropolitan region in the Nordic countries, accounting for 32.5% of Sweden’s GDP in 2025 and hosting major growth industries such as tech/ICT, fintech, life science, cleantech and data centers. With an economy overwhelmingly driven by services (85.2% of GVA in 2025), it grew by 1.9% in real terms in 2025 and is expected to expand by 2.0% in 2026, led by financial intermediation and real estate, trade/transport/information, and public and community services amid improving domestic demand.

Scope
  • Tourism remained resilient and increasingly domestically driven in Stockholm: 2025 arrivals reached 8.7 million (+3.2% YoY), led by domestic growth to 6.1 million (+7.5%) while international arrivals fell to 2.6 million (-5.6%); Jan-Mar 2026 sustained this trend with 1.7 million arrivals and a higher domestic share (74.3%), supported by stronger connectivity, cruise activity, and a push for year-round demand.
  • Construction stayed subdued in 2025 but the long-term investment pipeline is substantial: despite a downturn and a 2.5% fall in new-construction permits, total permitted floor area rose to 1.6 million m? and the sector contributed SEK106.3 billion to the economy; looking ahead, Stockholm targets EUR115 billion in investment by 2040 (housing and infrastructure), with major projects (Ostlanken rail, metro expansion, Stockholm Wood City, Stockholmshusen) supporting a 3.2% annual growth forecast for 2026-35 and significant workforce demand.
