Recycled battery metals from lithium-ion battery black mass refer to resource-recovered material products produced from black mass generated through the discharging, dismantling, crushing, and sorting of spent lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion battery manufacturing scrap. Through hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, combined pyro-hydrometallurgical, or direct recycling processes, the black mass is converted into recycled lithium compounds, recycled nickel compounds, recycled cobalt compounds, recycled manganese compounds, mixed metal intermediates, and recycled precursor materials. These products recover valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese from battery waste streams, improve the resource value of end-of-life batteries and manufacturing scrap, reduce pressure on critical battery metal supply, and provide circular material inputs for electric vehicle batteries, energy storage batteries, consumer electronics batteries, and other industrial lithium-ion battery applications.

Continued expansion of electric vehicles and energy storage batteries. The rapid growth of electric vehicles and energy storage systems continues to increase demand for lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and other critical battery metals. At the same time, larger battery production volumes generate more manufacturing scrap and create a growing future pool of end-of-life batteries, supporting long-term feedstock supply for black mass recycling.

Rising availability of battery manufacturing scrap. In the short to medium term, battery manufacturing scrap is one of the most important feedstock sources for recycled battery metals. Electrode scrap, off-spec cells and production waste from battery cell plants and cathode material plants are relatively clean, compositionally stable and easier to process than mixed end-of-life batteries, making them suitable for commercial-scale recovery of recycled lithium compounds and nickel-cobalt-manganese materials.

Gradual release of end-of-life EV batteries As early-generation electric vehicle batteries reach the end of their service life, the supply of spent lithium-ion batteries will increase steadily. This will provide a larger and more stable feedstock base for black mass production and metal recovery, shifting the market from being mainly manufacturing-scrap-driven to a broader recycling system supported by end-of-life battery flows.

Regulatory pressure on recycled content and battery recycling. Battery recycling regulations, recycled-content requirements and circular economy policies are becoming major demand drivers.
