Sodium chlorite is a compound of choice for use in producing small quantities of chlorine dioxide for the industrial and potable water treatment, food and beverage, rendering and other small scale applications. Chlorine dioxide is preferred disinfectant in applications where the use of other disinfectants either do not generate the required efficacy, or where their use produces undesirable effects such as taste, odor or the production of chlorinated or oxidized organics.

Sodium chlorite is used for a variety of applications. It is used as a disinfectant and purification chemical for water. It is also employed as a textile-bleaching and water anti-fouling agent. Additionally, it is used in the paper and electronics manufacturing industries as a bleaching agent.

The global sodium chlorite market size is estimated to grow from USD 178 million in 2015 to USD 243 million by 2021, at an estimated CAGR of 5.37% between 2015 and 2021. With regards to this, key players of sodium chlorite industry are expected to find potential opportunities in this market.

Worldwide, 93,376 tons sodium chlorite have been produced in the year 2015, while China attributes close to 67.09% of the world production, North America 19.41%, and Asia-Pacific 6.09%.

In terms of application, Water & Wastewater Treatment accounts for 50.12% of all sodium chlorite consumption, compared to 19.45% for Pulp, Textile & Paper industry.
