Growth of the overall SOP fertilizer industry has also been forecasted for the period 2013-18, taking into consideration the previous growth patterns, the growth drivers and the current and future trends. Further, key players of the industry like Potash Corp, Compass Minerals, Intrepid Potash Inc, Mosaic Company, Migao Corporation are profiled.
Regional Coverage
Sulphate of Potash (SOP) is the most commonly used non-chloride potash fertilizer in the world, with an annual worldwide demand of 6 million short tonnes per year. It can be sold as a powder for use in compound fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, and sulphate, as a granular product for direct application, or as a soluble product. SOP is priced at a premium to Muriate of Potash (MOP), and is utilized for sensitive, high-value crops including many fruits, vegetables, tobacco and tree crops such as nuts.
China is the largest consumer and producer of SOP as the usage of SOP in China is driven by significant tobacco production with China boasting the largest tobacco producer in the world. China is the main exporter of SOP fertilizer and has a production capacity of approximately 4 million tonnes.
SOP fertilizer demand is likely to increase in the coming years as world’s population is rising which is leading to decrease in arable land, which will result in increased demand of fertilizers for crop production. Crop price fluctuations, changing diet of people, suitable weather conditions, improving transportation etc. are the other growth drivers of SOP fertilizer.
Many new types of SOP fertilizers are being introduced in the market with additional features. The latest being the example of florial grade sulfate, which is soluble in water and increases the productivity and quality of the crop better than the normal granule SOP. New production mines for potash (e.g. K+S kali legacy project in Canada) are also being set up which will increase the capacity of SOP fertilizer.
