Lucite: Cessation of Acrylonitrile Production in Beaumont
29 Sep 2010 • by Natalie Aster
Lucite International (Southampton / UK; www.lucite.com) will close its acrylonitrile (ACN) production plant in Beaumont, Texas / USA by year’s end. Regional press reports indicate that the closure will make redundant 75 of the site’s 100 employees. Lucite blamed the prevailing market reality for the closure of the line with estimated capacity of 140,000 t/y, which it acquired from DuPont in 2005.
One of the site’s significant by-products is hydrocyanic acid (HCN), used in the production of methacrylates. With Mitsubishi Rayon’s takeover of Lucite this spring a new world power in methacrylates and other by-products like PMMA was born.
