Phthalic Anhydride Capacity Utilization Rates will Go Down to 50-70% in Addition to Plants Closures

25 Jun 2010 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON-World Phthalic Anhydride Market faces the consequences of the global economy downturn.

Profits had been decreasing since the beginning of the year resulting from low consumption. Many producers reduced operating rates to bring production more in line with demand. Prices were increasing due to proportionately higher fixed costs. The market was in over-supply.

There is no foreseeable growth in the need for PA globally and demand could be down 20-25% from last year.

There are no considerable projects planned in Phthalic anhydride market. Due to current circumstances in economy and general Phthalic anhydride demand slowdown future capacities expansions or construction are not foreseen.

As some plants may be closed due to tough market conditions, low demand, and high feedstock prices, the total Phthalic anhydride capacities will go down, the decrease may reach 10%.

In addition to plants closures Phthalic anhydride capacity utilization rates will go down to 50-70%. Thus, the market will face a production decrease in 2009. The situation will improve only by 2010-2011, global growth rates will reach 0-1% and further be going up and becoming 1-2%.
