LONDON – The ambiguous nickel price during the past five years resulted in a poor production, which indirectly caused the passive reduction of cobalt ore. In the past year, the world’s refine cobalt output decreased by 4.3% (or 4224 tonnes) YoY. Furthermore, the shortage of refine cobalt will likely continue in the coming years owing to limited new cobalt ore and refine cobalt capabilities.

The Chinese cobalt consumption is mainly influenced by the battery market, especially the power battery sector. In 2016, the battery industry accounted for around 76.6% of the total China’s cobalt consumption. By 2020, the figure will likely touch 83%. Moreover, the country’s government has set up a two-million sales target for electric cars up till 2020, that is expected to give a boost to the demand for cathode materials and, thus, propel the demand for refine cobalt.
