China Cathode Material Output Posted 43% YoY Increase in 2016, Says Chisult Insight in Its New Report Published at MarketPublishers.com

LONDON – China’s cathode material output reached 161.6 kilotons (kt) in 2016, demonstrating a 43% YoY increase. The growth was largely fuelled by 60% output growth in the power battery market. In 2016, the growth of the production value of the domestic cathode material was faster compared to its output owing to the ongoing hike in prices.

China’s NCM&NCA output stood at 54.3 thousand tonnes as of 2016, posting a 48.8% growth rate; production value grew by over 60% to reach just over USD 1.18 billion. Among the major 4 kinds of cathode materials, it captures the largest share of total production value. In Q1 2017 still followed a high growth trajectory with a 68% hike in production. By 2020, the demand for NCM and NCA in China is poised to grow to 208 and 20.4 kt, respectively.

The output of LFP was 57 kt in 2016, increasing by 75% YoY. The demand was supported by the development of power battery and energy storage battery markets. But on the back of the original limitation of LFP’s power density, the use of LFP is likely to follow a downturn trend after 2018-2019.

To date, Chinese manufacturers, like CATL, Guoxuan High-tech Power, GEM, B&M Science and Technology, among others, are developing high-nickelic NCM/NCA materials. But this type of material has high technical barriers, especially in the preparation techniques and production environment.
