Baby Food Consumption in Greece Declined, Says Canadean in Its New Topical Report Available at MarketPublishers.com

28 Apr 2016 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – The baby food market in Greece increased remarkably from 2006 to 2008, but since then has been negatively influenced by the falling number of births and also the economic situation in the country. In volume terms, the domestic baby food market has decreased by 22.2% since 2009. The sharpest decline was registered in 2015. A traditional approach to food preparation still prevails in the country, however prior to the economic downturn there had been a sustained move towards the purchase of convenience foods. As a result of shrinking household incomes, price has become the major purchasing criterion.

During the past several years, the infant population (0-3 years old) in Greece has decreased considerably, as both crude birth rate and the number of babies born have declined. Therefore, a drop in baby food consumption was recorded in Greece: the domestic baby food consumption fell by over 15% during 2009-2015.

Multinationals take lead in all sectors of the Greek market. The top three market players – Nestlé, FrieslandCampina and Danone – together hold a 90% share of total value sales. Danone is the unrivalled leader in the country’s baby food market, accounting for a 40.5% share in 2015.
