08 May 2014 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – In 2013, the Japanese high net worth individuals (HNWIs) held nearly 22.8% (USD 2 trillion) of their combined wealth outside their homeland, whilst the world figure varied between 20% and 30%. In the same year, APAC accounted for almost half (45.9%) of the foreign assets of Japan’s HNWIs. It was followed by Europe and North America with shares of 39.2% and 8.1%, respectively. From 2009 to 2013, local HNWIs’ asset allocations to North America declined considerably (from 23.8% to 8.1%) in comparison with other regions. Meanwhile, APAC and North Europe were regarded as the emerging regions in terms of world investments.

By 2018, the foreign asset allocations of the Japanese HNWIs will likely reach USD 2.47 trillion, and will account for 22.3% of the country’s HNWI assets. By 2018, local HNWIs are predicted to increase the level of their investment in Europe to almost 44% of total foreign assets.
