Most of Entire TV Delivery Value Chain Can be Offered via Cloud, Claims MRG

15 Apr 2013 • by Natalie Aster

In recent years, the term “cloud” or “cloud computing” has become more popular. The cloud is simply another term for hardware and software services that are delivered as a managed service over a network, usually the public Internet. Cloud-based TV services are then services that are typically outside a TV operator’s plant. Instead of procuring, buying, installing, maintaining and servicing hardware equipment, for example, and licensing and acquiring software, TV operators can instead subscribe to a service.

The kinds of TV related applications and services that can be offered via the cloud are increasing every day. According to the report “Cloud-Based TV Services for Pay-TV Operators” by MRG Multimedia Research Group (MRG), vendors claim that pretty much the entire TV delivery value chain can be offered via the cloud. Technically, this is already happening because current OTT offerings like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and iTunes are all really cloud-based and consumers use their own devices, instead of using set-top boxes.
