Android Smartphones & Tablets Installed Base Reviewed in New Market Study by Signals and Systems Telecom

Google chairman Eric Schmidt took part in the Motorola Mobility launch, and talked up the latest Android figures, claiming 1.3m devices are activated every day now.

The huge statistics underpinning Android were thrown out in a clear attempt to invite comparison with Windows Phone - its flagwaver Nokia launching its latest devices across town - and even single-vendor iOS. Android activations passed the one million mark a few months ago and according to Schmidt, the installed base of smartphones and other devices with the Google OS now totals almost 500m worldwide.

According to the report “Android Smartphones & Tablets Installed Base by Device Model, Form Factor, Country & Region Q2'2012” by Signals and Systems Telecom, the focus may have been on Motorola's ability to harness Android's success and contribute to further growth, but the most important driver of these activations is Samsung, which has a more ambivalent relationship with Google. As the world waits for a new iPhone, the Galaxy maker increased its smartphone and overall handset market leads in the second quarter, most of that growth coming from its Android products.

Various market analysts have calculated Samsung's dominant market share in the US, Europe and worldwide in recent weeks, as the second quarter numbers are crunched, and the latest figures come from the UK. According to uSwitch.com's monthly Mobile Tracker, the Galaxy S III was the most popular handset in the UK in August, while the older S II and the iPhone 4S tussle for second position (narrowly won by the Apple device). The only new entry in the top 10 in August was the mid-priced BlackBerry Curve 9320, in sixth place, but the once-popular HTC One S is close to falling out of the league table, at number 10. Other bighitters are the Galaxy Ace, ranked fourth, the Sony Xperia U in fifth, HTC One X in seventh, and two other Samsung models, the Ace 2 and the Note phablet, in eighth and ninth.
