Global PET (polyethylene terephthalate) demand reached to 12,621,553 tons in 2010 major from Asia-Pacific region, which constituted 40.6% of the global PET demand during 2010. A significant portion of demand for PET was from the Asia-Pacific region, which constituted 40.6% of the global PET demand during 2010. This upward trend is expected to continue in the near future. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to account for 47.8% of global PET demand in 2020. Global demand for PET will increase to reach 23,452,281 tons by 2020 with a CAGR of 6.4% during 2010-2020.

China has been witnessing developments in petrochemical products manufacturing sector during last decade. Production in China has an added advantage of relatively low operating costs, and as a result there have been huge capacity PET capacity additions in the country. China accounts for almost half of Asia-Pacific’s import volumes during 2010. Demand from China is currently driving the Asia-Pacific market’s demand for PET.

According to the report “Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Global Market to 2020 - Increasing Demand from Carbonated Soft Drinks, Food and Beer Packaging in BRIC Nations Driving Growth” by GBI Research, food and beer packaging were the major end-use demand sectors in China over the last decade, with Compound Annual Growth Rates (CAGRs) of 16.8% and 17.1% during 2000-2010; this trend is expected to continue towards 2020, with growth rates of 10.4% and 9.5% respectively for these segments during the period. Meanwhile, the general trend towards investments in the PET-based end-use and downstream-derivative sector industries in China will also boost Chinese PET growth towards 2020.Natural gas derivatives, including ethane, are poised to displace crude oil (naphtha) based cracking in the petrochemical industry due to the high cost of crude oil compared to gas-based derivatives.
