Potassium Fluorosilicate (CAS 16871-90-2) May Be Fatal

28 May 2012 • by Natalie Aster

Potassium fluorosilicate (dipotassium hexafluorosilicon(2-)) is a dry, white, free-flowing, crystalline powder with the formula F6K2Si. It is almost insoluble in water, aqueous ammonia and ethanol; but soluble in hydrochloric acid. Potassium fluorosilicate is decomposed by heat to potassium fluoride (KF) and silicon tetrafluoride (SiF4), and hydrolyzed in hot water to potassium fluoride, hydrogen fluoride (HF) and silicic acid (H2SiO3). This chemical is highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin.

Potassium fluorosilicate has weak oxidizing or reducing powers; thought Redox reactions can still occur. Most compounds in this class are slightly soluble or insoluble in water. If soluble in water, then the solutions are usually neither strongly acidic nor strongly basic. These compounds are not water-reactive.

Potassium fluorosilicate is widely applied in wood preservation, ceramic and optical glass manufacture, in aluminum and magnesium smelting, in the synthesis of the mica. Potassium fluorosilicate is also used in specialized glasses, ceramics, enamels and as an insecticide.

Patented uses of potassium fluorosilicate include processes for preparing silicon tetrafluoride by the thermal decomposition of an alkali or alkaline earth-metal fluorosilicate in a fluidized bed reactor.

Also, the potassium fluorosilicate, recovered during the reaction of potassium fluoride and silica with an aqueous solution of hydrofluorosilicic acid, may further react with ammonia in water to form an aqueous mixture of ammonium fluoride and potassium fluoride.

Potassium fluorosilicate market is covered in the study Potassium Fluorosilicate (CAS 16871-90-2) Market Research Report 2012. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks potassium fluorosilicate market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current potassium fluorosilicate prices in the market.
