LONDON – World bioethanol production started in 2003 with 33,514 million liters and grew to 105,608 million liters by 2011 at a CAGR of 15.4%. The global production of biodiesel started in 2005 with 4,854 million liters and grew to 23,579 million liters by 2011 at a CAGR of 30.1%. Environmental concerns and rising energy security issues will increase the growth of biodiesel and the government support in the form of subsidies will further boost the biodiesel market. By 2020, global biodiesel production is expected to reach 41,917 million liters at a CAGR of 6.6% over 2011-2020.

The global bioethanol trade increased from 1,257 million liters in 2006 to 1,689 million liters in 2007 and 1,754 million liters by 2010. The US contributed significantly to the global bioethanol trade in 2010. The key global bioethanol exporters in 2010 were the US, Pakistan, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium. In 2010, the global biodiesel trade increased to 17,950 million liters from 14,927 million liters in 2009.
