Pumpkin Patch Ltd Has a Chance to Rehab According to BAC Report

03 Oct 2011 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – Pumpkin Patch has a bunch of markets to cash on – the whole Asian region is showing a boom these days. Rapidly growing economies of China, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, make Asia a very promising expansion field.

First example is India, which has the largest child population in the world. Children are in the centre of attention in Indian families. Few years ago kid swear market was mainly unorganized. Now all global brands target his segment as they see the benefits. For example, kids footwear market is barely touched in India, and now it is becoming a battle field among child apparel brands.

Another example is China, with over 1,000 brands in children's clothes market. The market in China is so fragmented it still lacks good brand presence. According to the statistics, since 2005 China has witnessed a baby boom that will last 10 to 15 years more. Kidswear related industries enjoyed a 30% growth during the last decade, and are forecasted to improve even more. In 2010 child goods market value exceeded CNY 200 B (besides from apparel this number also includes toys). Chinese kidswear industry is expected to have reached CNY 150 B by 2015. Annual growth is going to be 10%.

Pumpkin Patch recent financial performance is weak. Last three quarters reflected a decline in main indices. Both revenues and net income fell to a point of NZD 174 M and NZD 8.1 M respectively in January 31 2011. Australia plays as the major retarding force. FY 2010 results were also a flop. A decrease by 7.3% in revenues showed company’s slow down. Pumpkin Patch stock price dropped after the announcement of unaudited FY 2011 results. The company suffered NZD 1.88 M net loss and a 6.7% decrease in sales to NZD 338 M.

Founded in 1990 and headquartered in Auckland (Australia), Pumpkin Patch engages in design, production and distribution of children fashion apparel. It has four brands – Pumpkin Patch, Urban Angel, Patch Maternity and Charlie&Me. It operates about 250 stores in New Zealand, Australia, UK, Ireland, and USA. It also has established a wide distribution network through retailers in other countries.
