Silver is a white, ductile, moderately soft, lustrous metal, found in an uncombined state or in some ores and naturally occurring minerals. It is mainly obtained as a by-product of processing such ores as copper, lead and cobalt arsenide ores, among others. Silver is extensively used in the manufacture of jewelry, currency coins, silverware, mirrors, and electric conductors. It is also applied in chemical, photography, health and beauty care industries.
Mexico, Peru and China are the dominant silver producers, with the total mine output of around 12,300 tonnes annually, while the largest reserves are located in Australia, Peru and Poland. Coeur d’Alene Mines Corporation, Fresnillo Plc, Republic Metals Corporation and Silvercorp Metals Inc. are amid the top industry participants.
