The notion “polyalcohols” refers to a class of alcohols containing above two hydroxyl groups. Ethylene glycol, erythritol, glycerol, ribitol, arabitol, mannitol, galactitol are among the most common types of polyalcohols. Depending on the chemical structure, polyalcohols can be divided into three types: monosaccharide, disaccharide and polysaccharide.
Polyalcohols are widely used as sugar substitutes; food additives in chocolates, cookies, lollipops, baked goods, chewing gums, candies, and a far more. Food items containing polyalcohols are considered to be low calorie and have relatively low negative impact on teeth. Polyalcohols are also used in such pharmaceuticals as cough syrups and drops, throat lozenges, etc. They are required for the production of thermoplastic polymers, antifreezes, personal care products and cosmetics. Moreover, some polyalcohols are used as components of paints, resins, adhesives and coatings.
