A breast biopsy is a procedure in which a sample of tissue is removed from a suspicious area in the breast so that it can be examined under a microscope to check for breast cancer. There are a number of ways the tissue can be removed. It can be done as an open (or surgical) biopsy, where the surgeon makes an incision into the breast and removes either part of the lump (an incisional biopsy) or the entire lump (an excisional biopsy). It can also be done as a minimally invasive biopsy, which uses image guidance for exact needle placement and tissue removal. This is often performed by a radiologist as opposed to a surgeon.
