The bone structure of children and adolescents is highly malleable as it undergoes development. The ends of the long bones in this age group contain an epiphyseal plate, commonly referred to as the growth plate or physis, that is surrounded by hyaline cartilage. During growth and development, this plate is continually undergoing endochondral ossification, generating new bone from cartilage cells. A common occurrence during these phases of growth is misalignment and deformities of the upper and lower limbs. Although these deformities often correct themselves, in some cases they do not, and need to be corrected by surgical intervention. Historically, bracing and casting devices had been the gold standard for treating angular deformities; however, pediatric guided growth systems (PGGS) are quickly gaining popularity. Various deformities exist that can be treated by PGGS including valgus, varus or flexion deformities of the knees or ankles as well as hereditary multiple exostoses (HME), where bony protrusons fiorm on the surface of the bones.

As of 2011, there were three main competitors that provided PGGS devices to treat these deformities by re-aligning the limbs as they continue to grow: OrthoPediatrics, Orthofix and Biomet. All PGGS devices consist of a plate and screw system that is inserted via a minimally invasive procedure into the growth plate of the misaligned long bones. These plates and screws are normally composed of stainless steel but some varieties are made of titanium alloy. The screws are inserted into the plates at diverging angles ensuring that physeal tethering and not physeal compression occurs.
